Bringing Canon’s community closer through authentic stories
Canon wanted to inspire and engage its YouConnect community by showcasing the passion, talent, and creativity of semi-professional photographers. In collaboration with Anderson Hearn Keene, Norvell Jefferson was asked to create a series of personal, documentary-style films. These needed to be authentic, visually rich, and demonstrate how Canon users create powerful photography, ultimately encouraging deeper loyalty and driving further product engagement.
True north
Seeing
beyond the lens
YouConnect is about celebrating creativity and giving voice to passionate photographers. Our starting point was a simple insight: photography is not just about settings or technique, but about how you see the world. It is the instinct to notice, to frame, and to capture something others might pass by.
Our strategy focused on real-life stories that bring this way of looking to the surface, making the technical world of photography feel more human, accessible, and inspiring. By letting Canon users tell their own stories in their own environments, we showed how photography becomes more meaningful when it is rooted in personal perspective. In doing so, we built a bridge between the audience and the brand, turning YouConnect into a shared creative space rather than just a platform.

Ideation
Documenting creativity in the real world
We developed a narrative concept around everyday creators who elevate their photography through passion, experimentation, and personal perspective. Rather than focusing purely on technique, we chose to highlight the human side of photography, exploring what drives people to create and why it matters to them.
The series followed four semi-professional photographers, each with a distinct approach, captured in an intimate and observational style that reflects how they actually work and think. By spending time in their environments and focusing on their process, we showed not just what they create, but how and why they create it.
The tone remained light, human, and curious, allowing each story to unfold naturally while subtly demonstrating how Canon supports their craft in real situations.
Creation
4 photographers, 4 stories, 1 Canon community
We captured semi-professional photographers across Europe, filming in Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Wales, and England. With a small crew, we followed each photographer into their own world, spending time in the places that shape their work and perspective. From long, wind-swept beaches in Wales to the industrial backdrop of Liverpool, from the energy of Sarajevo to the quiet nature of Bosnia and the mountains and lakes of Austria, we stayed close to how they move, observe, and create.
Nothing was scripted. We worked as a fly-on-the-wall, allowing each photographer to fully step into their creative flow while we captured the process as it naturally unfolded. The technical layer came through reflection. In interviews, they walked us through their choices and techniques in their own words, connecting each moment back to how the image was made without interrupting the authenticity of the experience.
Deliverables
Henrik Spranz (Austria) focused on landscape and macro photography, guiding us through his nature-rich process and how he developed a distinct visual style.
Maja Topčagić (Sarajevo) shared her artistic portrait work, capturing redheads in moody, intimate settings, while reflecting on the joy of creative freedom.
Stephen McNally (Liverpool) showed us his journey into long-exposure black-and-white photography—an emotional and reflective story about patience, growth, and art.
Steve Deer (Wales) blended advertising experience with personal creativity, introducing us to the power of personal projects and accidental discovery.
Our imagination at work
By reimagining the format, we moved away from scripted tutorials and focused on real people, real situations, and first-hand perspectives. Photography is not just about technique. It is about instinct, learning how to look, and finding your own unique frame on the world.
This approach turned everyday photographers into storytellers and showed how Canon fits into their creative process, creating connection through authenticity rather than traditional advertising.
“The key is to find that little spark that people have and magnify it into a story that is worth spreading. An inspirational piece that makes you want to get out and do something.”
